Handy pocket-sized quick reference September 8, 2004
This book is good as a quick chairside reference for dentists to consult when faced with an oral lesion. Many of the chapters are organized by clinical morphology making it easier for the clinician to develop a differential diagnosis list or even a working diagnosis. The caveat is of course that the amount of detail the book provides is rather limited, but ideally it can guide the clinician towards a more effective consultation with a detailed oral lesion text.
Handy Diagnostic Aid, Yet Limited by Lack of Differential Diagnostic Protocol April 7, 2012
As a dentist, I needed a reference in the subject of oral pathology. It is something that is learned in dental school, but because, it is little used knowledge, it is easy to forget. Therefore, I purchased this paperback book to help me diagnose oral disease. The book is a helpful diagnostic aid, but is is limited in its scope. The book covers the majority of oral conditions that a dentist is likely to encounter. What follows is a brief description of the condition, a picture, and a treatment suggestion. Emphasis must be made on the word “brief”, as only the most pertinent details are given. I like this aspect of the book. I was not looking for a 5 pound hard-backed oral pathology manual, as I already have several. This book helps the practitioner make a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made, a more thorough resource can be accessed. A great feature of this book is the accompanying CD which contains the entire book, pictures and all. If one has multiple work locations, the CD will allow one to load the book onto any computer or portable device. I work out of three offices, so I essentially got three books for the price of one.
The major drawback to this product is the lack of a differential diagnostic protocol. A protocol of oral symptoms and their possible causes would have been the best companion to this book imaginable. This book goes lacking in this regard.
In summary, this is a brief, highly portable reference source for oral pathology. It’s major drawback is that it does not help the doctor by guiding through a differential diagnosis flowchart.
