Top-of-the-line text, April 27, 2003

What can I say? This textbook is strikingly well-written. Really, a monumental achievement. The writing is incisive, interesting, even fascinating. For those who thought periodontics was basically scaling and root planing, an odyssey through this book’s 1,000 pages shows otherwise. The illustrations are well-chosen and informative, and the quality of scholarship is consistently excellent throughout its 77 chapters. It exhausts every topic related to periodontology, from flap surgery to the microbiology of the inflammatory response, to basic s/rp therapy, to the logic of hand instrumentation, and is very up-to-date. Probably the best textbook on the subject. The accompanying CD-Rom was not too useful, mostly pretty pictures and captions, but it’s the text that counts. Revelations stud the pages and the book presents a solid overal paradigm of modern periodontics.

A Valuable Reference, August 31, 2006

This is a very thick book for a private practitioner. Practically all factors affecting periodontal disease are being discussed, from epidemiology, etiology, pathology to the treatment and comprehensive management of periodontal disease.
My interest in the book begins from Section IV, Periodontal Surgical because we didn’t learn much of this in dental school. Even techniques for periodontal plastic surgery are covered. I find this part most helpful in my private practice which focuses on cosmetic dentistry.
The section on implantology is also very useful. All too often, those of us sinking implants are only concerned with bone. Ignoring the soft tissues often lead to aesthetic problems later on. The information covered here is even more valuable than some of those you’ll find in books dedicated to implants alone.
My only complaint is that there are not enough colour images.
