Irresponsible publishing, 18 Aug 2010
This book is only good for one thing- the bin! I’ve now wasted a week puzzling over some of the verbal reasoning questions- presuming I had completely mis-understood the texts and worrying I am going to fail the UKAT. It was only when I went onto the quantative reasoning section and realised an astonishing proportion of the answers where patently wrong that I realised the authors might be publishing cowboys- churning out a load of rubbish and not even proof reading the text for faults. It’s very de-motivating when you’re trying to revise for one of the most important exams of your medical career and your IQ suddenly appears to nosedive because the book your reading tells you you’re always wrong. So relieved I visited these other online reviews to reassure me that I’m not the only one who has been sent on a merry dance by this book!
Ghastly stuff, 6 Sep 2010
A year ago, I made the mistake of buying this book and found it all but useless. There are numerous errors in the QR and VR subsections while over half, yes – over half of the items in the AR subsection do not obey the relationship rules stated in the answers. This obviously makes the relationships impossible to determine. Worst of all is that none of the questions in this book bear any resemblance to the actual UKCAT questions – one may as well do a crossword or read the back of a cereal box and call it preparation.
While studying for this year’s UKCAT I saw the 2010 addition of this so called book in Foyles, flicked through it and, low and behold, the errors were still there! We are not talking subtle errors here; one QR question asks candidates to find the x-value where line C crosses line C. The only explanation I can think of is that no one proofreads these questions as even a company with a mere passing interest in quality control would not knowingly allow this garbage to be published.
I beseech you to keep your money in your pocket and I would defy anyone to explain to me how this dreadful thing can form part of a useful UKCAT preparation or how any sum of money spent on it could be called a wise investment. Get another guide, or don’t get a guide at all, either would be infinitely better than this hopeless, unforgivable wreckage of a book.
Limited use, 4 Sep 2010
This book provides many example questions to all sections in the UKCAT. However these questions have little value when so many have incorrect answers at the back of the book. I would look else were for a reliable publication.
